Bill Atwell, as Managing Director, of Atwell Partners, LLC, provides consulting expertise to the financial services industry. He retired in 2012 as President of Cigna International which was a position he assumed in August 2008. Atwell was responsible Cigna’s global business unit which delivers access to superior quality healthcare and innovative financial protection programs to businesses, affinity groups and individuals around the world. Cigna International is licensed in 30 countries with revenues of over $3.1 billion and earnings over $220 million with a global workforce of over 16,000 and over 8.5 million customer relationships. He also served four years with Cigna Healthcare responsible for sales and health plan operations in the United States.
Atwell brings almost 40 years of experience from a variety of senior U.S. and international positions with Cigna, The Charles Schwab Corporation and Citicorp. Before being named President of Cigna International, Atwell provided consulting and market insights to the financial services industry while also serving on the Boards of USI Holdings Corporation and Fairfield University. Prior to that, he served for six years as President/EVP with The Charles Schwab Corporation, responsible for a broad array of individual investment and banking products. Atwell spent twenty-three years with Citibank where he last led their retail business in Belgium, France and Luxembourg. Previously, he was CEO of Citibank (Illinois) and Citibank (NYS).
Atwell is a graduate of C.W. Post College and earned an M.B.A. from Long Island University. He currently serves on the Boards of Fairfield University (Past Chairman), the Eisenhower Fellowship Foundation, AQR Mutual Funds (AQR Capital Management LLC), Webster Financial Corporation (WBS). Previously, he has served on the Boards of the Securities Industry Association, DePaul University, Chicago United, Steppenwolf Theatre (President) and as past Vice Chair of the Cigna & CMC Life Insurance Company of China.
